It acts as tumor suppressor and decelerates the progression of cells G1 phase to S phase of the cell cycle by inhibiting cyclin dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4 and CDK6), preventing phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (Rb), and thereby hindering the liberation of the transcription factor E2F, which promotes the transcription of target genes that are essential for DNA synthesis.
